There are 2 or 3 things to do here:

  • Read schema.org JSON-LD (<script type="application/json+ld"> tags). This is what Ggl recommends to site authors, so it should be a good one to go for.
  • Read Microdata (embedded attributes in the HTML)
  • Read RDFa metadata (haven't looked into)

I've done this with JSON-LD.
It's not super trustworthy (first example I tried marked the dates as 3 months after the real date...!) but it'll have to do for now.

Microdata may be a good idea, but no idea how many sites actually use it.
