# Fred
Fred is a soft-fork of the Zed editor, with the following privacy- and security-oriented changes:
- remove auto-download of Language Servers
- please download them yourself and make them available on your PATH, then Fred will use them. This is the model that Helix uses and that I appreciate.
- remove telemetry upload
- remove crash log upload
The removed features make me uncomfortable (especially downloading and executing external code), therefore Fred won't support them.
I don't plan on (m)any other changes at this time.
Updates will be ad-hoc in order to bring in new functionality and bug fixes from upstream, but likely not every single release.
